The Jack-O-Lantern Grins

Poetry

The pumpkin flesh
felt like cold leather
you could imagine it breathing
beneath that crooked grin

Close your eyes, listen
there are wings flying in the night
the Jack-O-Lantern grins
leaking pale yellow light

Can you see it?
those leather wings flapping
bleeding out chills
across the cold skim of night

Old Jack’s face grinning
you can imagine his breathing
a bitter sweet smell on the night
pumpkin flesh rotting
